My mother was diagnosed with colon cancer at the end of October 2008. After emergency surgery to remove her colon, the doctors informed us that it had metastasized to her liver (completely filling it) as well as the outer wall of her pelvic bone, and lungs. She is half way through her 3rd round of chemo, and she is so severely sick all the time from it, in and out of the hospital, that she has decided to stop treatment. She would be on Chemo for the rest of her life, so she has decided this is no way to live. She is only 48 years old, and has been so healthy prior to this.. I know I should be asking her doctor, but he is impossible to get a hold of, and always resists giving any sort of time line to us.. I was wondering how long it usually takes for someones liver to fail when it is consumed with cancer? And how long it usually takes for a person to pass away after their liver fails?
Thanks!

my mom (age 41) have 3 super tiny spots of cancer on her liver (started out as breast cancer) and they gave her 2 years.
she had chemo and is now cancer free.

I'm so sorry to hear about your mom! My mom was diagnosed with colon cancer last year but luckily it has not spread yet! I believe that every person is totally different and that's probably why the doctor won't give you a time frame. A very useful website that I found was cancercare.com - it had wonderful information. Good luck to you and your mom and God Bless!

Her doctor is really the best person to answer this question since no one on here is going to know the answer. It does sound like your mom has gone through so much that she knows it is time to quit life saving measures since the cancer is so far gone. Your family might want to get in touch with Hospice which is a wonderful organization that helps people just like your mom and you during this difficult time. They can help you all in many ways and I suggest you talk to them.
I don't imagine it will be very long for your mom. She is very young and I'm sure you love her. It seems like you have accepted her condition. Treasure the time you have left with her and make the best of it. I lost my dad to stomach cancer that just spread everywhere, so I kind of know what you are going through. My heart goes out to you.

Doctors are extremely reluctant to discuss timelines for terminally ill patients. It serves no constructive purpose to do so.
The reality of metastasized cancer is that it is generally terminal. Whether the patient receives treatment or not, the outcome is going to be the same. Treatment may extend life somewhat, but if it comes at the cost of great patient discomfort, then what is the point?
The focus of treatment should shift to quality of life in these situations. Choosing to cease some or all treatment, so as to improve the patient's general well being, is a logical choice.
It is extremely difficult for patients to confront such terrible situations, as it is for their families. Try to be strong for all of your family members, especially your Mom.
